Impact by Design: Care Gaps & TPO Methodology in Medical Affairs
Scott Thompson and Troels Sørensen unpack how care gap analysis and TPO methodology turn Medical Affairs impact into a repeatable, accountable system.
Medical Affairs teams have spent years talking about impact. The harder question is how to build the systems, goals, and accountability structures that make impact repeatable rather than aspirational.
Troels Sørensen (Global Head of Clinical Practice, Boehringer Ingelheim) and Scott Thompson (CEO, Acceleration Point) walk Medical Affairs leaders through the practical application of care gap analysis and Target Population Output (TPO) methodology to real-world patient journeys. They cover how to define and quantify meaningful care gaps, translate them into TPOs and stakeholder indicators, set accountability-based goals without creating fear, and build the organizational scaffolding, roles, processes, routines, that turns methodology into how the team actually works. More than 62 questions came in from Medical Affairs leaders before and during the live session, and Troels and Scott address the implementation realities, edge cases, and compliance boundaries teams are navigating right now. If your organization is ready to move from impact talk to impact habits, this is the session to watch.
What You'll Learn
- How to define and quantify care gaps using a logic model framework tied to real-world patient journeys
- What a Target Population Output (TPO) is, how it differs from a care gap, and how to express patient progress as a percentage for compliant commercial alignment
- How to prioritize care gaps when data is imperfect, incomplete, or inconsistent
- The compliance guardrails that determine which TPOs Medical Affairs can own, and why attribution is the wrong goal
- How Field Medical and MSL teams apply TPO accountability in daily practice
- The organizational scaffolding required for adoption: roles, processes, goals, and reward systems
